The National Museum of the US Air Force is the official museum of the United States Air Force and is located at 1100 Spaatz St, Dayton, OH 45433. It is the oldest military aviation museum in the world and has 360 airplanes and missiles on display.
The museum is free to visit, although some exhibits are restricted to registered museum members. The museum is home to many planes from the United States Air Force's past, including the B-17 Memphis Belle, which starred in two Hollywood films. It was the first heavy bomber to return to the United States after being withdrawn from the European theatre.
The museum's air collection contains a variety of aircraft, ranging from early war aircraft to modern jets. Early aircraft include a rare SPAD XIII and the MB-2 bomber. The museum's World War II collection includes the illustrious B-17F "Memphis Belle," which returned to the U.S. after 25 missions over Europe. The museum also has a B-29 Bockscar, which dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The museum also has displays of Korean War aircraft, including the F-86, the MiG-15, and the F-4.
The museum is divided into four buildings. Building 3 houses the Korean War Galleries and Southeast Asia War Galleries, while Building 4 houses the Presidential Gallery, Research and Development Gallery, and Space Gallery. In the Global Reach Gallery, you can view the Air Force One Boeing 707, which served every U.S. president from Kennedy to Clinton. There are also aircraft in the Space Gallery, including the F-22A Raptor and Titan IVB space rocket.
The museum is also home to a large exhibit dedicated to Bob Hope. His stand-up routines for the troops were recorded on video, and his Christmas Special Emmy was filmed. Though this exhibit is a little crowded, I enjoyed it all the same. If you're a fan of the comedian, this is a must-visit.
The National Museum of the US Air Force also owns other aircraft including former U.S. Army Air Service planes and aircraft on loan to other aerospace museums. Moreover, the museum's collection includes a number of aircraft that are permanently on static display at various Air Force bases. For example, a famous B-17 Flying Fortress, called the Memphis Belle, is housed in the Museum.
The Air Force Museum features rare aircraft and thousands of historical artifacts. During your visit, you will learn about the history of military flight and its importance to our nation. The museum includes interactive exhibits, sound effects, and theatrical lighting to help you learn about military aviation. You will also learn about the history of the Wright brothers and how the Wright Brothers helped to invent the modern air force.
The National Museum of the US Air Force is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Dayton, Ohio. It features 360 aircraft, missiles, and other aircraft and is the official military aviation museum of the United States. It is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Admission to the museum is free, but there are charges for some attractions.
